WHAT TO EXPECT IN SPH-K 450
Throughout the semester, students move through training, preparation, school-based programming, reflection, and final presentations. The experience is designed to help students build confidence, apply course concepts, and support youth through sport and physical activity.
1. Register for SPH-K 450 Students begin their Hoosier Sport experience by joining SPH-K 450, a service-learning course connected to sport-based youth development, school-based programming, and community engagement. |
2. Lunch with Students Students travel to one of Hoosier Sport’s rural school partners and meet youth participants during lunch. This gives students a chance to introduce themselves, learn more about the school, county, and youth about their interests, hobbies, favorite foods, places, and experiences. |
3. Museum Project After lunch visits, SPH-K 450 students use what they learned from youth participants to prepare a museum-style presentation or poster. This project helps students better understand the young people they will work with and encourages them to connect their experience to the school community. |
4. Team Training Team training introduces students to Hoosier Sport’s mission, values, and approach to school-based programming. Students learn what to expect throughout the semester, build connections with fellow team members, and develop the skills and confidence needed to support youth in partner schools. |
5. Take 5 Take 5 gives students the opportunity to practice their coaching and communication skills through positive reinforcement. Students lead a game or activity with the class, receive feedback, and continue building confidence before working with youth in school-based settings. |
6. School-Based Interventions Throughout the semester, students help deliver sport and physical activity programming in partner schools. These intervention days allow students to apply what they learned in class, support youth through movement and mentorship, and practice creating a positive and inclusive environment. |
7. Final Presentation Students work on their final presentation throughout the semester and present during finals week. This project helps students reflect on their experience, connect their work to research and program goals, and build skills related to applied research, communication, and community-based practice. |
